The story of the Gibeonite deception found in Joshua 9 points to the deception sin can have in our own lives. Knowing that sin is deceptive, we need to learn to listen for discernment and seek God’s direction in life.
Joshua’s initial response to the Gibeonites was, “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?” This statement was the voice of discernment speaking. If he had paid attention to that voice, the Israelites would not have faced the fallout.
In the same way, It is wise for us to listen for and pay attention to that voice in our heads, that feeling in our gut, that reveals to us the truth of a matter. That voice in our heads and that feeling in our gut could just be the Spirit of God in us that is guiding us to do the right thing.
We already know right from wrong, even from a young age. Remember, Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. As a result, all mankind has the ability to know right from wrong, good from evil. It is the Spirit of God within us that speaks through that knowledge when we make decisions. It is His voice that tells us, “this is okay,” or “don’t do it.”
If we listen for that voice, God’s directions will lead us down a path of righteousness. However, if we choose to ignore the voice, we will be moving away from God’s best.
So, let us be mindful of God’s leading. Seek the discernment that comes from His Spirit and follow His directions when they come.
Just a Thought…
