As Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land, he and his army had to face many battles. He experienced the success in the destruction of the city of Jericho. However, he also experienced the pain of defeat in the attack on the city of Ai. This defeat came about because of a sin committed in the camp. After taking care of the sin, God gave Joshua a renewed purpose and a promise.
God gave Joshua a renewed purpose to attack the city of Ai again. Along with this purpose, God also gave a promise that they would succeed as they did against Jericho. In this second attack on the city of Ai, God did as He said He would. The Israelites were able to rout out the people of that city and capture it for themselves.

In a similar way, we are given a purpose and a promise as we walk this earth. As the scripture states, and as Jesus said to those who would listen, we have a command to follow that comes with a promise.
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind;’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” – Luke 10.27
“Go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them all that I have commanded you, and surely I will be with you to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28.19-20
Our purpose is clear. We have been given a command, a commission, to love God and to love others. We also have the responsibility to grow in our faith and help others in their faith journey.
God’s promise is clear. As we follow His command, we have a wonderful promise… Jesus will be with us every step of the way. He will guide us and work through us to accomplish the work He has for us to do.
Are we living with the full knowledge of His purposes and promises today?
Just a Thought…
