Place our Trust in the Lord

Jeremiah was given instructions from God to teach a lesson to the Israelites through the use of a linen belt. The lesson given, according to Jeremiah 13.10-11, shows how we are to place our trust in the Lord, and not on our own understandings. We read in verse 10…

These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt—completely useless!

The people had become hard and cold towards the Word of God. They trusted in their own hearts, their own understandings, and looked to self instead of the Lord. They were led away from God and toward foreign gods. Verse 11 continues…

For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,’ declares the Lord, ‘to be my people for my renown and praise and honor. But they have not listened.’

God’s desire was for His children to be the expression of His greatness to all the world. Just like a linen belt expressed beauty and nobility to the wearer, God wants us to be clothed in His righteousness to express His beauty and nobility to the world around us.

But since they chose not to listen to God, they became useless and ruined like the buried linen belt.

With this in mind, what can we do to remain faithful to God, to trust in Him instead of ourselves?
