In the book of Joshua, we read about some consequences from a treaty that a deceitful nation made with Israel. Because of the treaty, several other nations rose up against the deceivers with plans of destroying them. In a similar way, there may be consequences from different areas in our lives because of the “treaty” we make with Jesus. We may come under attack because of our faith in Him.
When we come to faith in Christ, we begin the process of being made into the image of Jesus. Things that once held us captive no longer have any hold on us. Activities that once brought entertainment no longer bring the joy we once knew. The people that once impacted our lives no longer have power over us.
Because of this change, opposition may also come, even from those closest to us. Jesus said to His followers, “You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me” – Luke 21.16-17.
It is not a very encouraging thought, but it is truth. The world did not accept the person of Jesus. They sent Him to His death on a cross. Even though He overcame that death, rising from the grave, people still do not accept Him. Not only do they not accept Him, many hate Him for who He is.
This may be the same result for those of us who call on His name. We might lose friends and family members. We could even be hated because of our faith. Even so, we can have hope. There are ways we can respond to the negative consequences of faith.
Over the next couple weeks, we will be considering ways we can find confidence and hope even in the darkest times.
Just a Thought…
