A Description of the Lord

Through Jeremiah, God reveals His thoughts on idols and those who make and worship them. He also reveals more about Himself by giving a description of who He is. How is the Lord described in this passage? 6-7, 12-13, 16

There are none like Him

  • There is no one like Him (6)
  • Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you (7)

No idol, no man made image, no person, place, or thing, that is lifted up, compares to the God of Israel. He is the all powerful, all knowing, and the ever present God of the universe. There is nothing in the heavens or on the earth that compares with Him.

His name is our Hope

  • He is Great (6)
  • His name is mighty in power (6)
  • He is the true God (10)
  • He is the Living God (10)
  • He is the Eternal King (10)
  • The Lord Almighty is His name (16)

Our God is Great, Mighty, True, Living, and Eternal. There is no one greater than Him. In Him we can place our hope and faith. No idol can offer the attributes and abilities of the God of heaven.

He is the Maker of all things

  • He made the earth by His power (12)
  • He founded the world by His wisdom (12)
  • He stretched out the heavens by His understanding (12)
  • He is the Maker of all things (16)

Science may try to prove that the universe and everything in it all happened by chance. In truth, it is God, and Him alone, that brought about what we see and know into existence. It was by His power, wisdom, and understanding that He formed the heavens and the earth. By His voice, He brought everything into existence, even creating the human race in His image.

His power is evident

  • The earth trembles in His anger (10)
  • The nations cannot endure His wrath (10)
  • The waters in the heavens roar at His thunder (13)
  • He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth (13)
  • He sends lightning with the rain (13)
  • He brings out the wind from His storehouses (13)

Again, science may be able to explain how the things of nature come about, but it is by God’s power that it began. When we experience the power and effects of wind, storms, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, etc., we are seeing the power of God exhibited on the earth. Are we amazed by His power?

In what ways would you describe Him from your own experience?
